The Doula Association of Alberta affirms its ongoing support for Alberta midwives and the families they serve across the province.

We recognize that access to midwifery care in Alberta is shaped by complex, systemic factors that continue to affect both families and care providers. Changes to service availability,  particularly within hospital and community settings, can have wide-reaching impacts, influencing where and how families are able to access care and increasing pressure on the midwives supporting them.

When access is reduced, the effects are often felt across the system. Families may experience fewer perinatal care choices and greater uncertainty, while midwives are asked to support growing catchment areas, increased workloads, along with heightened emotional and physical demands. These conditions challenge sustainability and contribute to burnout, even as the need for compassionate, relationship-based care remains strong.

As a supporting profession, doulas work closely alongside both families and midwives. We witness the essential role midwifery plays in providing safe, respectful, and continuity-based care, and we see the importance of collaborative models that center the wellbeing of families

.

The Doula Association of Alberta remains committed to standing with families and midwives. We are open to ongoing dialogue and collaboration that supports sustainable care, equitable access, and a strong birth workforce across Alberta.

  2. Copy the AAM form letter content and email it directly to your Member of Legislative Assembly. Find your MLA here.

  3. Tell someone! Share the AAM's link on social media, talk to your friends and clients, and encourage people in your circle to join you and get loud for midwifery care in Alberta.

We acknowledge that we are on traditional territories in Alberta of the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit people whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries. We respect the histories, languages and cultures of First Nations, Métis, Inuit and all First Peoples of Canada whose presence continues to enrich our community. We recognize the land as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting. We acknowledge the history of birth on these lands where First Nations, Métis and Inuit people were the first birth protectors.
