About the event

Dr. Susan Jacoby recently retired from her position as Associate Professor of Midwifery at Mount Royal University. Her research is focused on underserved immigrant populations, especially Somali, Ethiopian, and Sudanese women with Female Genital Mutilation. Subsequent research with vulnerable populations and social justice issues includes perinatal health literacy, intimate partner violence, postpartum depression, waterbirth and midwifery education. She participated in developing curriculum and teaching in the Mount Royal University Senior Midwives Tutor Training Project (SMTTP) to reduce neonatal and maternal mortality in Ethiopia from 2012-2018. Her sabbatical year was spent at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland from 2018-2019 working on maternal-child health projects. She has published on the safety and efficacy of waterbirth, leading to a provincial-wide clinical guideline and policy for Alberta Health Services. Since retiring from teaching, she has remained active in research and is currently conducting a study on collaborative care among obstetricians and midwives in Canada, and consults regularly on maternal-child health.

We acknowledge that we are on traditional territories in Alberta of the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit people whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries. We respect the histories, languages and cultures of First Nations, Métis, Inuit and all First Peoples of Canada whose presence continues to enrich our community. We recognize the land as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting. We acknowledge the history of birth on these lands where First Nations, Métis and Inuit people were the first birth protectors.
